Understanding the restructure of US pharmacy benefits

For years, much of the conversation about pharmacy benefits has focused on reform: greater transparency, clearer economics and better alignment among the organizations responsible for prescription drug benefits.

Something bigger is now underway. The pharmacy benefits market is beginning to restructure.

Recent regulatory actions are accelerating that shift. The Federal Trade Commission’s settlements with two of the nation’s largest PBMs likely mean changes to practices that have long shaped the economics of pharmacy benefits.

When the economics of a market change, the market itself has to adapt. Rae McMahan, SVP of Payer Solutions at Prescryptive, joined Drug Topics on the Over the Counter podcast to discuss the market shifts we’re seeing today.

The question is no longer simply how to make the existing pharmacy benefits model more transparent. It’s how to connect the participants in a changing market so that new economics and new access models work for the people they’re intended to serve.
